Lewis Hamilton flew to the US a few days ago and today took part in the hit TV show Good Morning America, which airs on ABC.
The program’s host began jokingly asking whether the seven-time world champion should now be called “sir” after Hamilton was knighted last December, forcing his friends to call him that?
‘No, only the father! Lewis laughed. “I don’t really demand this from anyone, but my nephews now call me ‘Sir Uncle’. Generally in the UK this is a huge privilege but somehow I rarely find them appealing to me like that.
Hamilton, of course, said a few words about the upcoming Miami Grand Prix: “For us this is a very important event. Of course we race in Austin, Texas, and the US Grand Prix is always an incredible success. But I started performing here in 2007 in Indianapolis.
Thanks to Netflix’s Drive to Survive series, Formula 1 is becoming increasingly popular in America, with two races now here and a third scheduled for next year in Las Vegas.
I have been coming to the US for many years and have always wondered why Formula 1 is not so popular in your country. People here prefer to race like NASCAR, but Netflix has managed to get a huge audience for our sport and Formula 1 is in its heyday.”
Recently, Lewis has taken up a new hobby – skydiving, and he shared what he thinks of this activity: “I don’t know why I’m doing this, but I’m just living my life, I like freedom, and when, after overcoming fears, you experience the feeling of free fall, this is real life!
I’ve already done about 80 jumps, which isn’t that much compared to real masters…”
