Mercedes chief Toto Wolff fears the Oscar Piastri case will set a precedent in which graduates of youth racing programs will refuse to drive for the teams that supported them.
Toto added that he had not studied the Piastri case in detail, but suggested that the lead teams will now hire even more lawyers to protect themselves from recurrence of such scenarios.
Toto Wolff: “I continue to take the position that car manufacturers should invest more money in youth programs. We invest in go-kart tracks, in “formulas” for young people – sometimes it’s a little money, but in some cases it can be significant.
We’ve been funding the careers of George Russell and Esteban Ocon for a long time, but Piastri set the precedent – if you’re smart, you can maneuver. Obviously, this won’t have the best effect on the entire industry. We will have to hire more lawyers to draft tougher contracts.
As for me, I believe in the integrity of our riders. We have to stay positive, look for talented drivers and help them develop.”
