Nic de Vries, reserve driver at Mercedes, has his first training session in Monza in an Aston Martin on Friday. He is slated to replace Sebastian Vettel and has already started work on the Aston Martin F1-based simulator at Silverstone, according to the team.
For the 27-year-old Dutchman, this is the third training session this season in which he collaborates with the teams of the championship: in Spain he drove a Williams car, in France he got behind the wheel of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
Nick de Vries: “I am delighted to work with the Aston Martin team, especially on a track as legendary as Monza. This will be my third training session of the season and I have driven all three different cars, which is a great opportunity to learn how F1 vehicles and teams work.
I hope I can offer Aston Martin a fresh look at their AMR22 and implement a training program that will benefit me and the team.”
Mike Krak, Team Leader: “We are delighted to welcome Nick to our team and look forward to working with him at Monza. I follow his career with great interest, he performed well in Formula 2 and won the title in 2019, then confirmed his skills by becoming Formula E champion last year.
Now we are going to listen to his opinion about our car. His performance shows that he deserves a place in Formula 1 – I hope Nick gets the chance to work behind the wheel of the AMR22 to demonstrate his capabilities.
