Currently, two teams are building new wind tunnels – McLaren and Aston Martin. All work is to be completed by 2023, and cars made with advanced equipment will hit the track by 2024.
At Red Bull Racing, the construction of a new wind tunnel is planned. The project is in the design phase and construction at the Milton Keynes base is set to begin in two years. After the implementation of the project, all divisions of the team will come under one roof, as is now organized by Ferrari in Maranello. The cost of the wind tunnel is estimated at 50 to 70 million euros.
Red Bull Racing’s current wind tunnel is of good quality, but it takes time to generate enough airflow to produce reliable data. The new wind tunnel will deliver the required flow much faster, so engineers don’t waste valuable time.
However, Adrian Newey did not want to build a wind tunnel and offered to carry out the entire development of the car using CFD technologies, but the teams agreed not to stop using wind tunnels until 2030.
