In Monza, Fernando Alonso will overtake Kimi Raikkonen in the number of career starts – on Sunday Fernando will reach 350. Before the Italian Grand Prix, the Alpine driver commented on his performance and told what results he expects from the race.
Q: What can you tell us about the Zandvoort race where you finished sixth?
Fernando Alonso: We had a good race in Zandvoort for great fans. Saturday proved to be difficult – I didn’t reach the qualifying final because of the traffic. In the race, however, the car had a good pace and I was able to regain many positions.
We controlled the situation until the safety car departed, when our rivals went to the pits for new tyres. I had to fight to the finish and after the Ferrari penalty I went up to sixth.
The race turned out to be very tense – it seemed like one long qualifying! In the end I scored points for the tenth time in a row and now we will try to repeat the result in Monza this weekend.
Q: You are about to race in Monza for the 19th time behind the wheel of Formula 1. Do you still enjoy racing on the Italian track?
Fernando Alonso: Monza is one of the historic circuits of Formula 1. With this built series we move from Zandvoort with its Dutch atmosphere to passionate Italian fans in Monza. I have always been warmly welcomed in Italy, given my past performance for Ferrari. I won twice in Monza and won several podiums.
The track is exciting and you can overtake, so on Sunday we will see a lot of fighting. This weekend is the end of a long streak of three weeks and we want to earn points so that we can get to the away games in good shape.
Q: This weekend you are equal to Kimi in the number of starts in Formula 1. What does this mean for you?
Fernando Alonso: It’s great to overtake Kimi in the number of starts this Sunday – a great achievement. To be honest I try not to think too much about records and focus on racing.
This is of course a great achievement and one day I will be happy about it, but now I continue my career and I want to enjoy every race weekend.
