Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Haas F1 team principal Gunther Steiner shared his expectations for the new race in the US state of Florida.†
Q: In the previous leg, the team again earned points: Kevin finished in the top eight in the sprint and took 9th place in the Grand Prix. That weekend you could test the car in different weather conditions – how would you characterize its strengths and weaknesses?
Gunther Steiner: I don’t think it has any obvious pros or cons, in my opinion our car is good enough in every way.
Of course we underperformed in the main race of the weekend in Imola than we would have liked, so it is important to analyze all the information collected and try to understand how we can achieve a more efficient operation of the rubber.
But overall the car is pretty good, you just have to keep working hard and earn more points.
Q: Formula 1 is going to Florida, where the new circuit will host the Miami Grand Prix for the first time. Have you been to this city before? What do you know about Miami and what are your expectations for the upcoming race?
Gunther Steiner: Unfortunately I didn’t go into the city itself, but I was at the Homestead–Miami Speedway. I know it is a very interesting city and I would like to have some time to get to know it, but I think the whole weekend will be very busy as there are so many things to do. An exciting race awaits us, so we will have to postpone our introduction to the city for the time being. Maybe until I retire from motorsport.
Q: American fans are used to the fact that racing is always a show. You run the only US team in Formula 1 – do you feel any difference when you race at home races that take place in the US?
Gunther Steiner: It’s always great to race at home, and when the Miami Grand Prix came on the calendar, it got even better as this race is closer to our base, which is located in North Carolina.
When a motorsport event is accompanied by a show, it is a nice addition to the weekend schedule, but the main event should always remain the race.
Q: There are high expectations for the Miami Grand Prix – how important is this stage for Formula 1 from a business point of view?
Gunther Steiner: We can already feel it, new partners, new sponsors are showing an interest in us, and this interest is growing very noticeably. In this regard, the race in Miami and the inclusion of the stage in Las Vegas on next year’s calendar will of course help us a lot.
