Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will lose ground at the start of the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday. Both drivers will be penalized for switching power plants.
In Monza, Valtteri Bottas gets the sixth Ferrari power plant. The replacement was necessary – a week ago in Zandvoort, the Alfa Romeo racer retired due to a malfunction in the combustion engine.
Finn’s former teammate Lewis Hamilton is also getting a new power plant – the fourth of the season. In Lewis’s case, the consequences of a collision with Fernando Alonso on the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix will have an impact.
After the race in Spa, the Mercedes engineers studied the combustion engine of Lewis’ car at the base and concluded that it could no longer be used. Apparently the engine became unusable due to overheating, because after a collision with Alonso almost all the coolant leaked from the radiators of Hamilton’s car.
Sergio Perez may get a new power plant in Monza. The Mexican has already exhausted all replacements of the engine, turbine and motor generators MGU-H and MGU-K allowed for the season. The next replacement of any of these components will result in a fine.
Given that the team replaced the power plant with Max Verstappen in a similar situation in Spa, it would make sense if the same scenario were implemented in Monza in relation to the team-mate of the reigning world champion.
