Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Alpine F1 drivers answered a few questions about the upcoming weekend.
Q: What excites you most about the upcoming race in Miami?
Fernando Alonso: Literally everyone! It is clear that the new circuit always presents challenges for us. First we learn it on the simulator and then we get to know it in real life, and it’s always a special experience, so we’ll see.
I’ve been to Miami a few times, but both times I’ve rested there. For example, it was there that I met the New Year 2018, and then I really liked the city. So now it will be great to race there.
Esteban Okon: I’ve always dreamed of visiting the United States, but so far I’ve only been to Austin and haven’t had time to see anything else. And now we’re going to Miami, to the city I’ve seen so many times in several movies. I even feel like I already know this city, even though I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. Staying there will be great!
Q: What do you already know about the Miami Grand Prix circuit?
Esteban Okon: Unfortunately not much. So far I’ve only seen some footage of her and I know she’s walking around the stadium. Of course we were preparing for this Grand Prix, in the simulator, but I don’t have an exact idea of the track yet. But I also heard that there is a pool in the paddock.
Fernando Alonso: What are you! In general, we only know so far that a full house is expected in the stands, but not much is known about the track itself. I know they talk about it a lot in the paddock, the fans discuss it, sponsors are interested in it – everyone wants to go to the race in Miami.
Q: Can you compare this track to others you drive in Formula 1?
Fernando Alonso: I don’t think we can make a fair comparison at this point. But when a new track is built, the creators always try to make it special in their own way – not just in terms of pilots. They also make sure that there are overtaking opportunities on the track, that there are straights and I think this is one of those circuits.
Esteban Okon: I hope that with the new cars we can do a lot of overtaking and that the public will see an interesting show.
Q: If you were a fan, which platform would you prefer?
Fernando Alonso: The one with tickets left! But they say they are already completely sold out. I think everyone is waiting for an interesting race, because this Grand Prix doesn’t just attract people because of what happens on the track itself. There is also plenty to do outside, even in the evening. I think people will appreciate it.
Esteban Ocon: In warm weather I would watch the race from the beach! And if it’s cold, I’d move somewhere closer to the stadium. I think you can fully feel the atmosphere of the race there.
