Fernando Alonso estimates the chances to climb the podium

Fernando Alonso scored points in ten races in a row. At a press conference in Monza this weekend, the Alpine rider estimated the chances of a podium place.

Fernando Alonso: “Our team has picked up a good pace and shows excellent consistency of results.

However, in the previous ten races we were not always able to avoid problems. For example, in Barcelona I had to change the engine and start last, and in Austria I didn’t start in the sprint at all and because of that I finished last on the grid on Sunday. All this shows that the team needs to improve on certain points to have a clean weekend. If we manage to do this, we will earn points in the next races.

We now have exactly the same chances on the podium as we have throughout the season. We are just behind the top three teams, so our natural positions are seventh and eighth. That’s why we need the help of faster teams to get on the podium.

This was the case in Spa, for example, when I started third because of penalties from my opponents. There will also be fines in Monza – from what I’ve heard Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton will lose their positions. All of this can help us get into higher positions at the start, but as the race progresses we tend to drop back to our natural places.

We don’t have a Monza-specific rear wing, so we’ll see how we perform this weekend. The car was fast in Baku and Spa, so I see no reason why we can’t be competitive this weekend. Until the end of the season there will be tracks where we need to be fast – Suzuka and Austin, so I’m looking forward to these races.”
