Mark Webber: Lewis was written off too early

During the race weekend at Imola, Lewis Hamilton stated that the Mercedes team will not compete for the title in 2022. However, former Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber thinks it is too early for rivals to write Lewis off.

Mark Webber “I think people wrote Lewis off too early and too quickly. In Bahrain he drove brilliantly and finished third, in Saudi Arabia he was prevented by the exit of the safety car, the same situation was repeated in Melbourne. Lewis lost practically no points through his own fault and in Melbourne he was very fast in the race. Only in Imola did he struggle in qualifying and in the race, but everyone quickly forgot that he lost most of the points through no fault of his own.

George Russell drives brilliantly, which is very good for himself. It’s great that young people put experienced racers in a fight. That’s the way it should be and Lewis won’t shy away from the fight.

The potential that a team like Mercedes has is not to be underestimated. Lewis is most dangerous to opponents when he has nowhere to retreat. Lewis never loses motivation and that is probably why he is the best driver of all time.”
