At Zandvoort, Carlos Sainz was fined for an unsafe exit to the pit lane, although he told the stewards to avoid the McLaren mechanic who appeared in front of him – which was the only reason Alonso prevented it.
Commenting on this situation at Monza, Carlos said Formula 1 should think about the safety of the mechanics in the pit lane.
Carlos Sainz: “Unfortunately, Formula 1 rarely talks about the safety of mechanics. On some tracks there is a very narrow pit lane, during pit stops these guys sit between cars flying past at a speed of 80 km/h, sometimes a few centimeters separating us from a dangerous incident.
I like the track in Zandvoort, I want to race there every year, in Budapest and Singapore – where there is also a narrow pit lane, but you have to think about the mechanics. We talk a lot about car and track safety, but I’m concerned about what can happen in the pit lane one day, especially if there are several pit stops at the same time.
So far we have not discussed this matter with the GPDA Drivers Union or with the FIA, but I did speak about it with the stewards after the last race when they accused me of leaving the pit lane unsafe. I have asked the stewards to convey my explanation to the race director and the FIA staff. Perhaps I will raise this issue during the pilots briefing.
