This weekend Felipe Drugovic could already become the Formula 2 champion – this will happen if, according to the results of tomorrow’s sprint, he scores 8 points more than Theo Purscher, who occupies the second line of the personal standings.
The Brazilian MP Motorsport driver now has a 69-point lead over Purcher and there are still four races to go before the end of the season – two in Monza and two in Abu Dhabi. During the weekend you can earn up to 39 points, i.е. There are a total of 78 points to play.
Felipe doesn’t have much to contribute and if he does as well in the sprint tomorrow as he did in Sunday’s race at Zandvoort last weekend, then under no circumstances will anyone be able to stop him from winning the youth series title , in which he is spending his third season.
He could have taken another step towards the title on Friday if he had won qualifying at Monza, but in the end he didn’t get two bonus points for pole position. However, everything is fine.
Qualifying already took place in the evening, when it was not so warm yet. The sun was setting, the asphalt was slowly cooling and the track temperature was just over 33 degrees.
Ayumu Iwasa was the first to show a more or less representative time, but his result was immediately blocked by Liam Lawson, who was the first to set a lap faster than 1 minute 33 seconds. Two Brazilians, Enzo Fittipaldi and Felipe Drugovic, moved up to second and third in timing.
But the races continued and Lawson’s time was in turn blocked by Theo Purscher, Logan Sargent and Yuri Vips.
In general, Vips and Lawson had something to fight for: Before the start of the Italian race weekend, the formidable Helmut Marko said he was very dissatisfied with the performance of the Red Bull youth program in Formula 2. Vips and Lawson needed this signal and add – indeed at the start of qualifying it was as if the warning from the Red Bull motorsports adviser was in effect and gave them an extra boost.
However, the fastest driver in the first part of qualifying was a representative of another race academy: Alpine Youth Program member Jack Doohan set a lap in 1:31.965. The 19-year-old Australian, the son of famed ex-motorcycle racer Mick Duane, is already being said to be one of the real contenders for the place of Esteban Okon’s partner.
The riders returned to the pits, changed tires and went back to the track when less than ten minutes were left until the end of the half-hour qualifying session.
Drugovic drove his lap well, but he was immediately ahead of Marcus Armstrong and Liam Lawson, but Duane did it again with his result of 1:31.641 seconds.
At the very end of qualifying, Ayumu Iwasa, a Red Bull youth driver, who also tried to follow Dr. Marco got to beat Duane’s time and even ride in the best first sector, but it all ended when the Japanese took off at full speed in the final corner, in the famous Parabolica. In addition, the accident was very impressive – at the moment of impact on the guardrail, the car was engulfed in flames. Apparently something flammable got on the hot parts of the power plant.
But the dramatic consequences were avoided, there was no major fire, the driver was not injured, he got out of the broken-down car under his own power and at that point the session time expired.
Jack Doohan won pole position for the third time this season and will start Sunday’s race from pole position. The second fastest time was set by Liam Lawson, and the cars of Marcus Armstrong and Felipe Drugovic will be on the second row of the grid in the weekend’s feature race.
Where is Theo Purscher? The French rider ART only set a 14th time, which made it difficult for him this weekend.
Drugovic will start from 6th in tomorrow’s sprint – on Saturday in F2 there will be a partially reversed starting order – so the Brazilian could well be fighting for a podium spot, if not for the win.
Frederic Vesti will start the sprint from pole position and set a 10th fastest time – this is a good opportunity for him to replenish his points pool, although he is really fighting for a maximum of fifth place in the individual standings, and even then with the best result.
