Charles Leclerc’s pole at Monza was Ferrari’s 22nd at the Royal Park – an all-time record for one team on one track…
Laurent Mekis, race director: “It’s great to take pole in front of a packed crowd for the first time in two years at Monza. We dedicate this achievement to the tifozi, who always support us.
Charles did an excellent job, at the decisive moment he drove a perfect lap. Carlos also drove very well and showed the same time as his partner as they scattered each other in the slipstream. We have already done this in France and Belgium, to get an optimal result you need a good understanding between the riders.
Now we are fully focused on preparing for the race, where we want to show the same pace as in qualifying.”
Charles Leclerc (1st): “I’m happy. The Monza stage is always special, having won pole position in front of countless tifosi, I feel absolutely incredible sensations, especially after our difficulties in Spa where the requirements for the car are similar.
From the first practice I felt confident in the car. We have a good race pace, I hope I can turn this pole into a win tomorrow. I will do my best for this.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “Qualifying from the first session went well. I was fast in the first and second session, but on the last lap of the final I was too far behind Pierre Gasly’s car and couldn’t use the slipstream.
We can be satisfied with today’s result, which was the result of the hard work of our employees in Maranello.
Tomorrow I will start because of penalties behind and I will try to regain as many positions as possible. The support for the tifosi in the stands over the weekend has been incredible and we will do our best to give them an exciting race.”
