Mercedes drivers showed 5th and 6th results in qualifying in Monza, but are evaluating Saturday’s results in different ways. In any case, both predict that Sunday’s race promises to be tough.
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “The session went well, but this is not my best qualifying. I think we lacked speed today and the 5th result is the maximum I could achieve.
I lost two tenths in the last sector and now we have to find out what happened there in the last corners, although we can say I’m happy overall. I think I made the only mistake, and that was in the second session, so I corrected it later.
Tomorrow we have a difficult race, because the DRS doesn’t work that effectively on this track, the speed difference is quite small. It’s possible that many cars will line up in a long line and everyone will have the option to use DRS, so the day might not be too much fun. However, I will try to stay positive.”
George Russell (6th): “Honestly, we just didn’t manage to have a good session. The first part of qualifying went pretty well, we lost only a few tenths to Ferrari and I thought we had a real chance of staying in these positions. I thought we would lose up to four tenths of them, but lost 1.4 seconds. This is of course bad.
But I’m glad neither Lando Norris nor Fernando Alonso could beat us because it was basically a battle for second place in tomorrow’s race. I won’t say I was very upset, but in general it is of course a shame that we lost so much. This does not contribute to the understanding of the machine’s properties.
Frankly, I think we should pay maximum attention to the tasks we face. I think a week ago, and also in Budapest, we saw that if you follow the cars of other teams that are faster than us, it ultimately affects our final results.
I would like to think we can compete with Charles and Max, but it looks like it won’t work, they are much faster than us.
Our minimum program for the race is to get on the podium, so I hope we can start normally tomorrow and get involved right away.
At the same time, we are not very interested in how Max and Red Bull will behave, because he still finishes ahead of us. He will be ahead of us, probably in the fifteenth round. I don’t think it’s as easy to overtake here as in Spa, but they have such a speed that they will still get through the pack.”
