Haas F1 head Guenther Steiner still doesn’t know who will be Kevin Magnussen’s partner next season, while the US team is negotiating with all possible candidates.
Günter Steiner: “We have not made a decision yet, as we are considering which option will contribute most to the development of the team. To be honest we don’t know if Mick Schumacher will stay or not. He drove a very good race in Canada, Great Britain and Austria, but he lacks stability. It should produce convincing results more often.
But we’re in no rush to decide on the vacancy and Mick still has a chance to show what he’s capable of.
At the same time, I have personally negotiated with most possible candidates, as this is part of my job. I can’t say anything concrete yet. In any case, it is our job in the future to minimize the risks that could stand in the way of the further progress of the team. You can of course try to take a risk when choosing a racer – it’s good if everything goes as it should, but it’s bad if it’s the other way around.
We would have preferred an experienced professional who can work well with engineers and give good feedback. However, among the riders who are currently free from obligations to other teams, there are none. Maybe with the exception of Daniel Ricciardo. But he’s not at his best right now and we don’t know what his plans are. He may want to skip next season. But again, I negotiate with everyone.”
Steiner also stressed that the current contract with Ferrari for the supply of power plants and other components, the purchase of which will enable regulation, has a duration of three years and will be extended in 2023.
