Last year, Formula E champion Nick de Vries made his debut race in Formula 1 at Monza, replacing the ailing Alex Albon at Williams. The Dutchman battled his rivals to finish ninth, repeating the team’s best result of the season. His teammate Nicholas Latifi finished 15th in the round behind the winner.
Nick de Vries (9th): “I am satisfied with today. It was crucial to have a good start and a clean first lap. I ended up in a group of cars with an active DRS wing, which helped keep up, but my pace itself was good. In addition, we chose the right strategy and I checked the condition of the tires.
I’m glad I was named “Rider of the Day”. I am grateful for the opportunity, which I grabbed with both hands. A great day for the team, but it’s worth noting that the fines played into the hands of the opponents. Overall we had a great race and I’m very happy for everyone in the team and for myself.
I hope to get a place in Formula 1 next year, but today my dream came true. I am impressed with the result we have achieved in a short time and now I want to enjoy the moment.”
Nicholas Latific (15th): “A very difficult race. At the start I was wedged between several cars and tried to avoid damage. Many cut the first turn without being fined.
Unfortunately, a slow pit stop almost robbed me of all chances in the race. The goal was to hold the starting position and fight, but it didn’t work out. The car was fast on the straights, but had problems with braking and cornering. We will try to recover in Singapore within a few weeks.”
