In the F1 Nation podcast, 1996 World Champion Damon Hill about Charles Leclerc’s mistake at Imola which caused him to lose much of his lead…
Damon Hill: “In addition to speed, top riders are distinguished by the ability to make the right decisions in a stressful situation. In Imola, Charles could have achieved more, but he decided to take a risky move and later admitted that he was greedy. Even on TV it was clear that this maneuver would not work – and of course it was deployed.
Leclerc just thought to himself that he could handle the car on the pavement, but that was too ambitious. It’s not worth the risk if you have a lot of responsibility. Such actions should simply be excluded from your practice if you are considered one of the strongest. You can’t act so recklessly in the battle for the title.
Look at Sergio Perez. He’s fast and reliable, he hardly ever does crazy things – and this is his advantage.
