Malaysia hosted the Formula 1 stages from 1999 to 2017, but was forced to leave the national grand prix for financial reasons. Sepang circuit chief Azhan Shafriman believes that now is not the right time to start negotiations on the return of the race as the country’s government has other priorities regarding economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Azkhan Shafriman: “It is necessary to assess the global picture. Formula 1 should benefit not only the circuit but also Malaysia in terms of increasing the country’s visibility, creating jobs and developing talent. If we pay promotion fees that are high enough, the returns should be high for the country as a whole, not just the track.”
At the same time, Shafriman added that if the proposal to hold the Malaysian Grand Prix comes directly from Formula 1, Sepang will support the idea.
