George Russell again climbed onto the podium and is generally happy with this result, although the Mercedes team admit they still lose a lot against the leaders, and this gap has to be made up for.
George Russell (3rd): “After the finish, I said to the team on the radio: “It doesn’t matter if we were fast or slow, but we have climbed back on the podium and will continue to do so!”
Unfortunately, we certainly lacked speed all weekend, but in the last three races we have climbed on the podium twice and finished fourth once, so we can be happy with such results.
To try and force the battle on Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, we had to choose some alternative tactics, but they were too fast for us. But I’m glad we gave it a try anyway, because in the situation we’re in now, there’s nothing left.
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “The race went well. I didn’t even expect such a result. Before the start, the team predicted that we could compete from fourth to sixth, and then it seemed to me that this was a bit exaggerated, but I enjoyed it a lot.
At the beginning of the distance, when the car was still heavy, I experienced certain difficulties. Although I managed to avoid problems on the first lap, after that I got stuck behind two AlphaTauri cars, and still I am very happy that I was able to get ahead and earn points. I think at the end of the race there were two cars behind me on fresher tires so I can say I’m happy I finished fifth.
Plus the car got minor damage in the beginning – I think I ran into some debris coming out from under the opponent’s car. This damaged the fairing of one of the front wheels. Although I don’t know how this affected the tempo, because in principle it left a lot to be desired. However, I don’t know what these fairings are for.”
Toto WolffTeam Leader: “As you can see this track is not suitable for us and we are definitely only 3rd in speed so probably 3rd and 5th places are our maximum.
At the start of the race it looked like Lewis was stuck behind the other cars, but after that it was interesting to watch him make his way forward. When the rubber worked well, it was very fast.
In the Constructors’ Championship we are only 35 points behind Ferrari, so we could easily compete with Ferrari for second place. There are still six races to go and we just need to get the best possible results every weekend.
Let’s see what we end up with, but if we can stay ahead of Ferrari it will be a comfort after all the trouble this car has caused us. And yet we are losing too much to the leaders, and this gap must be reclaimed.
