Helmut Marko was of course happy with another win for Max Verstappen, but Red Bull’s motorsport adviser is dissatisfied with the FIA’s performance and believes the Italian Grand Prix should not have ended behind the safety car.
On the 47th lap of the race (the distance consisted of 53 laps), Daniel Riccardo’s car stopped on the side of the road due to technical problems, which could not be quickly evacuated. This operation took too long, so the safety car, which entered the track, stayed on it almost to the finish and only returned to the pits on the last lap, blurring the end of an interesting race.
“It was absolutely the wrong decision,” Marco told Sky Deutschland. – The safety car chose the wrong driver and shouldn’t have missed those who were lap behind. None of this had any effect on the situation and we had seen a nice finish. Perhaps in this case our team would have had a harder time and we could be in an unfavorable position. But the interests of the sport must come first.
Moreover, the marshals had to work faster, they had plenty of time. On this track, the peloton takes quite some time to complete a lap. And in the end, the end of the race was ruined.
But we had a clear advantage – Max managed to come back incredibly quickly and take the lead. Maybe we can get 14 wins this season. Until now, all tracks were suitable for our car. Although it cannot be ruled out that Charles Leclerc can still outpace us in some races. And yet we already want to win the championship in Singapore – that’s the perfect place to celebrate. ”
Speaking of 14 wins, Marco means Verstappen can break the long-standing record of wins in a season: while Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel share first place in this ranking, both have 13 wins. Because of the Dutch racer Red Bull Racing is already 11, and before the end of the season there are six stages.
