George Russell was surprised by the somewhat strange approach taken by the owners of the Monza circuit to update the tarmac: this happened only partially and, according to the Mercedes driver, could influence the course of the battle, and consequently the results of the Italian stage of the championship.
The Monza circuit first hosted the Italian Grand Prix on September 3, 1950, and the surface has changed many times over the past seven decades, but the way this is done now raises questions. The work was carried out in the first five turns, as well as in the Ascari chicane.
“The approach is very unusual. In fact, they only replaced the coating on the track and not the entire track, Russell noted. – They did not begin to shift the asphalt across the entire width from right to left. And I don’t know how this will affect the course of the fight if the ground is made up of two different types of asphalt; it is not clear where the grip is better or worse – on the racing line, on the inside of the track or on the outside.
We’ll have to wait and see how the coverage changes. To understand this, I will of course try to choose wider trajectories.
I don’t think we will have any problems building the car in Monza. In Spa we saw that it was not most pronounced on those parts where the highest speeds were. There the car was prone to build up in Turn 15, where the asphalt is very bumpy, so the bottom of the car was very close to the track, and this started vertical vibrations. But for example in Eau Rouge, where the asphalt is good and smooth, nothing bothered us.
But now we know how to reduce the effect of swaying, although the difficulty is that it is important to achieve the optimal balance of the car. In theory, of course, we show higher speeds when the build-up is still a little manifested, although it is uncomfortable to fly. But look at Ferrari, their cars hit the bottom of the track pretty hard every lap.”
