After starting seventh due to a penalty, Max Verstappen won the race at Monza – and spoke about his impressions…
Q: Another great race! It was your first time on stage in Monza. How are the impressions?
Max Verstappen: Beautiful view from the stage! This is one of the best catwalks of the season! Somehow I wasn’t exactly supported, but that’s about it.
It was warm on Sunday, I had to think about tires. Luckily I had a great first lap, passing several cars before they formed the “DRS train”. After that, both sets of tires worked perfectly.
Q: When the virtual safety car mode was announced, you didn’t have any Was it tempting to switch tires like Charles did?
Max Verstappen: The team told me about this opportunity. Everything could have ended differently.
Q: What is it like to win five races in a row in Formula 1?
Max Verstappen: This is amazing. This season has been incredible for us. We enjoy the success and want to continue in the same spirit. We used to have problems on several tracks, but now everything is fine – our car is competitive on almost all tracks. And we are very happy about this.
Q: How about a possible restart in the final laps?
Max Verstappen: As far as I understand, the car was stuck in gear, because it couldn’t be evacuated for that long – we had to wait for a crane to pick it up. The marshals simply did not have enough time.
Everyone wants to finish under the green flag, this time the race finished earlier. But I had a new set of soft tires so I wasn’t too worried.
Q: Yesterday I spoke to Nick de Vries – this weekend he replaced the ailing Alex Albon and told me? That I could hardly fall asleep before the game. Do you think he deserves a place on the grid?
Max Verstappen: I saw how Nick struggled as he defended tenth place. You know, debuting in Formula 1 in such a situation is very difficult. He did great. He defended effectively, kept calm, made no mistakes – I’m very happy for him.
Before the start, I told him not to get excited – you just have to relax. I remember my first start – everything happens so fast that you can’t predict the development of events. You have to start clean and drive the first lap, which he did. This is amazing. We know each other very well, I was happy to cheer him up.
Q: In the course of the Dutch Grand Prix some torches were thrown on the track, here you were booed by the fans of Charles. What do you think?
Max Verstappen: People often ask me how I feel when I’m booed, but I came here to win the race, which I was able to achieve in the end.
Some people may not appreciate it just because they are passionate about the other team. But it won’t ruin my day. I just enjoy the moment.
