McLaren Racing head Zak Brown believes the points system for obtaining super licenses that allow you to drive in Formula 1 should be overhauled.
Zach Brown: “The new FIA President Mohamed Ben Sulayem is now doing a lot of reviewing, I think the system for obtaining super licenses needs to be revised as well.
I understand that these are the rules and it is impossible to break them. But I don’t consider these rules just because they apply here and now. Colton Herta or Pato O’Ward deserve to drive in Formula 1, but the current rules don’t allow that. And nobody knows when such a decision can be made.
If Colton Herta, who has racked up many Indycar wins, does not qualify for a super license, then the system itself will have to be overhauled. We tested him at the wheel of Formula 1, he worked for two days and did a great job. There is no doubt that this man is capable of driving this car.
The rules were written for me, so I don’t want to speculate how they came about. But if they had intervened earlier, neither Kimi Raikkonen nor Max Verstappen could have entered Formula 1. They simply hadn’t been super-licensed.
