Former Formula 1 driver, Sky Deutschland pundit Timo Glock is delighted with Nick de Vries’ performance at Monza – and sympathizes with Mick Schumacher…
Timo Glock: “Nick de Vries convinced me with his debut race. He only got behind the wheel of the Williams on Saturday morning, but was able to prove himself in qualifying and performed excellently on Sunday. In the race Nick behaved very smartly, was able to pull away on the first lap, quickly found the right rhythm and kept his position in the “DRS train”. He has clearly stated his ambitions for next season.
In my opinion, this is a powerful statement for the pilot market. Previously he was considered a candidate for the reserve driver role and now many want to sign a contract with him as chief pilot. I have no doubt that we will see him in this role in one of the teams next year. Unfortunately for Mick Schumacher this means that he has a new opponent in the battle for the remaining places in the teams.
Mick’s performance received much less attention, although he also did well, finishing 12th after many practice problems in a car that was underspeed at Monza. A decent result, and this time he clearly outperformed his teammate Kevin Magnussen. If a restart was announced after the safety car, Mick could earn points. He didn’t make any mistakes, he got the most out of the car.
I have to say that Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto never believed in Mick. The lack of commitment on his part suggests that the collaboration between Ferrari and Mick Schumacher will end at the end of the year. The question is where Mick will end up next.”
