At Monza, Ferrari moved Charles Leclerc from a one-stop strategy to a two-stop strategy, costing the Monegask the loss of race control. The Scuderia’s chief strategist Inyake Rueda explained what guided the team in making such a decision.
Iñache Rueda: “We saw an opportunity to make a pit stop during the virtual safety car. Our pre-race calculations showed that the entire distance could be easily covered with one stop on the Soft and Medium tires.
The two-stop strategy allowed the race distance to be covered ten seconds slower than with the one-stop strategy. On the other hand, stopping during the virtual safety car gave a nine-second gain over a normal pit stop. We saw this opportunity and had to decide whether to go for a two-stop strategy or stick to one pit stop.
After we turned off the virtual safety car, we realized that in theory Charles would finish four or five seconds behind Max Verstappen. However, we kept attacking, expecting a perfect second pit stop and hoping that a virtual or real safety car would play into our hands closer to the finish.
