The Miami track will be the 36th career of an experienced Spaniard, competing in the Grand Prix…
Q: Fernando, let’s not forget the weekend in Imola…
Fernando Alonso: Unfortunately it ended in retirement and didn’t score any points. Just bad luck. I was happy with the result of qualifying on Friday, but in Saturday’s sprint the tires wore out quickly and on Sunday my race ended after contact with Mick at the start. We had hoped for more after four stages, but the season has only just started. Last year after Imola I only had one point. Everything is still ahead!
Q: What do you expect from the very first Miami Grand Prix?
Fernando Alonso: I like to play in America, Formula 1 has been gaining popularity in this country in recent years. The circuit in Miami is new for everyone, it will be interesting to understand how it will turn out in practice.
The atmosphere will be great, now it’s time to be in Miami as the Miami Heat are successfully performing in the NBA playoffs. I’ve been here several times and now I’m happy to come with Formula 1. Last week I worked with a model of this track on the simulator in Enstone. I think we’re in for an interesting weekend.
Q: You’ve been behind the wheel of a new-generation car for four stages. What do you think of them now?
Fernando Alonso: While it’s hard to say, the results are mixed. In Bahrain and Saudi Arabia we saw a lot of overtaking and in Australia and Imola it was, as expected, difficult to overtake. It’s too early to judge new cars.
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have unique overtaking opportunities – it all depends on the specific track. We can already say that chasing rivals has become easier behind the wheel of this car, and since everyone wears rubber to different degrees, you can use different strategies. It’s a pleasure to drive these cars, but how much more spectacular racing has become, it’s worth talking about later when we do more Grands Prix.
