According to Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Audi’s F1 project, linked to the purchase of Sauber, could be led by former driver Cristiano da Matta, who the publication says is one of the candidates.
Andrea Cremonesi: “Audi’s plan is to buy Sauber. Audi has a purpose, they continue the series of investments. New buildings will appear on the base in Neuburg in the coming months. Now that the deal has been announced, the German manufacturer may expand the department, which currently has 120 employees.
So far, Audi has not appointed a team leader, but Cristiano da Matta is among the candidates. At Audi, they don’t just become a power plant supplier, they want to make important decisions as a team. Negotiations are underway and when an agreement is reached, the management structure at Sauber is likely to change.”
Cristiano da Matta is the 2002 Champ Car Series Champion and raced in Formula 1 in 2003 and 2004 for Panasonic Toyota Racing.
