Conditions for Max Verstappen’s early title in Singapore

Six stages before the end of the season, Max Verstappen is 116 points ahead of the closest pursuer Charles Leclerc in the individual classification. Following the results of the next race in Singapore on October 2, the Red Bull Racing driver can secure himself the 2022 title ahead of schedule.

However, this requires the fulfillment of several conditions, and not all of them depend on Max. Verstappen needs to create a sufficient lead in points, not only from Leclerc, but also from his teammate Sergio Perez, who has not yet lost the mathematical chances of winning the championship.

The first condition for Verstappen’s early title already in Singapore is Max’s victory in the race. With any other result from Verstappen, the battle continues during the Japanese Grand Prix.

The second mandatory condition is that full points must be awarded for winning the race, ie 25. If the distance of the race is less than 75% of the planned distance, the winner gets 19 points, which Max does not have enough. In the case of Singapore, the winner must complete a minimum of 46 laps to earn 25 points.

The fulfillment of two mandatory conditions in Singapore does not guarantee an early title for Max, but will bring him considerably closer to the target, the achievement of which will already depend on the results of rivals, among other things.

If Verstappen wins the race and sets the best lap, then Leclerc need not finish higher than eighth and Sergio Pérez no higher than fourth to win the championship. If Max doesn’t make the best lap of the race, Leclerc cannot finish higher than ninth and Pérez can’t finish fourth or fifth if he makes the best lap.

If these conditions are not met, the battle for the title on the podium in Japan will continue. Anyway, given Max’ advantage in the individual standings, he is almost certain of the championship at the end of the season – the question is how soon this will happen.

Red Bull Racing is 139 points ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. Red Bull Racing in no way guarantees an early victory in Singapore.
