Stefano Domenicali is in danger of inflicting the ire of veteran fans who have never welcomed too revolutionary changes. However, the Formula 1 president and CEO understands everything perfectly and it doesn’t seem to scare him.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Domenicali spoke about plans for possible reforms and acknowledged that not everyone will like them: “As for ways to make our sport more attractive, we consider all scenarios and point our antennas in different directions.
For example, I know that many fans don’t want to hear about reverse running order. But we’ve seen time and again that racing can be an exciting scenario when the stars have to bounce back, because there’s a lot more overtaking on the track. We cannot afford not to think about the factors that magnify the spectacle.
We have to experiment with new formats. It’s easy to think of reasons why you shouldn’t, but it’s the wrong approach to life. Of course purists will turn their backs on us, but let’s not forget the history of Formula 1: for example, there were dozens of qualifying formats alone.
In addition, I would like to see points awarded based on training results – then the importance of Friday sessions will immediately increase. And from the third session, free races can be cancelled.
Racers constantly have to fight for something so that it also influences the results of the World Cup. Sprint races are the first example of this approach, although it could be better.”
