Russian Robert Schwartzman is a fantastic driver who deserves a combat driver spot in Formula 1, said Ferrari racing team boss Mattia Binotto.
Earlier it was learned that Schwartzman will make his F1-75 Formula 1 debut in the first free practice session of the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The stage will take place from October 21 to 23.
Robert is a fantastic runner. I think he’s very quick, especially when he’s driving Formula 1. Every time he’s driven our cars (in testing at Maranello) he’s been successful. There are drivers who can be good in Formula 3 or Formula 2, and then not shine at a higher level. Robert in this sense is the opposite.
This season he has worked a lot on the simulator, helping our team in the development of the current car. He has improved, he has developed new skills and he is much more mature today than he was a year ago. And so I think he deserves a place (in Formula 1),” Binotto told Autosport.
Schwartzman will temporarily take the place of one of Ferrari’s combat drivers – the Monegasque Charles Leclerc or the Spaniard Carlos Sainz.
The 23-year-old Russian had previously received an Israeli license allowing him to retain the right to race in the event of a complete suspension of Russian riders by the International Automobile Federation (FIA). At the moment, Russian Alexander Smolyar is racing in Formula 3 under a neutral flag.
In the spring, the Russian Nikita Mazepin, who played for Haas, lost his place in Formula 1.
