Gary Gannon, Haas’ race engineer who works with Mick Schumacher, believes his protagonist can handle the pressure well even now, although he finds himself in a difficult situation where his future in Formula 1 is in doubt.
“Mick is a pretty mature person, he’s able to control his emotions and doesn’t get discouraged by bad results,” Gannon said. “That’s why we don’t feel any extra pressure when we have to correct mistakes we made in previous races.
In principle, he knows how to prevent this on his own, not to escalate the situation, but we don’t try to do this either. After an unsuccessful weekend we try to rebuild it well, and if something works out well, we try to develop it further.
In Monza we didn’t earn any points, although Mick steered very well during the race. Before that, we reached the final of qualifying in Zandvoort, with the best result in two years. Even though we didn’t manage to finish in the top ten in the Grand Prix at the time, we tried to take into account the positive experience we gained in that qualifying.
We should always find something positive, because it will be useful in the future, even if it is not always possible to achieve the desired results.
Gannon is an experienced specialist who has worked with Roman Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen in his time, so he can compare the approaches to work that characterize these riders: “Mick wants to get a lot of information during the race, so I always communicate with him Sometimes it even seems that I talk too much, but that’s exactly what he needs.
Roman Grosjean had a more accurate idea of how he was going to act, so I spoke to him much less. Kevin Magnussen is somewhere in the middle in this regard.
They are all great guys and I have enjoyed working with all three. Although they are slightly different people, I got along very well with them, so it can’t be said that our way of working was very different in all three cases.
It seemed to me that Roman always knew exactly what to do. Kevin had to be instructed how to work with all these tools a rider has at their disposal, and Mick is constantly learning, so we try to give him as much information as possible.
It is still unclear who Gary Gannon will work with next season, because Mick Schumacher’s contract with Haas expires at the end of this year and the team is in no rush to determine the composition for 2023.
