Max Verstappen has a long-standing business relationship with the Jumbo brand, a major supermarket chain operating in the Netherlands and Belgium and owned by the privately-owned Van Eerd Group.
Jumbo is the personal sponsor of the world champion, and even before Formula 1 returned to the Dutch circuit in Zandvoort, Jumbo Racing Days were held there for several years in a row, with Max as the main character, of course.
But the company was recently at the center of a serious scandal: the Dutch police raided the home of Fritz van Erd, owner and CEO of Jumbo, last week. The local press reports that law enforcement agencies are conducting a large-scale money laundering investigation that includes some questionable financial transactions related to motorsport.
Raymond Vermühlen, who leads Max’s career with Jos Verstappen, said the world champion’s management is monitoring developments, but not jumping to conclusions.
“We have to be careful”, the Algemeen Dagblad quotes him as saying. We are waiting for the facts to be presented. We are in contact with the management of Jumbo and the marketing work continues.
We have agreements with Jumbo and the investigation has no consequences for the supermarket chain, and that was clearly emphasized. Let’s not build all kinds of assumptions and wait for the facts.
