The Red Bull Ring press office announced the completion of work on a new chicane designed by Hermann Tilke, which will change the configuration of the Austrian circuit, but will not be used in Formula 1.
The updated chicane between Turns 2 and 3 is designed exclusively for motorcycles to slow down when approaching the hard braking zone in Turn 4. The chicane includes two 90-degree turns surrounded by gravel pits. The changes were made after a clash between Morbidelli and Zarco during the 2020 MotoGP competition.
Reconstruction, carried out in close collaboration with the FIA, started in November. More than 15 sketches of the chicane were made before the final decision was made.
The configuration used for the Grand Prix has not changed, but new asphalt has been laid on this stretch.
