Oscar Piastri will make his F1 debut behind the wheel of a McLaren next season, but the story might have turned out differently if the talented Australian had ended up in Red Bull’s youth program. Red Bull Racing head Christian Horner said he regretted the missed opportunity to sign a contract with Piastri.
Christian Horner: “Oscar has raced for the Arden team in Formula 4 and Formula Renault. There is no doubt that he has an extraordinary talent. Red Bull had the chance to sign him at the time, but we didn’t take this opportunity, which I sometimes regret. The results he has achieved in Formula 3 and Formula 2 are simply phenomenal.
We continue to invest in young talent – our program covers all categories – from karting to Formula 4 and other series. I think at Red Bull we are doing the right thing by giving children a chance by investing in young talent. Thanks to us, they have opportunities that would not exist without us.
This year Isaac Hajar had a great debut season in Formula 3. Ayumu Iwasa performed brilliantly in Formula 2. And I have only mentioned two participants from our program.
Liam Lawson has had a tough year, but he is also a talented rider. Dennis Hauger didn’t make much of an impression in Formula 2 after he dominated Formula 3, but how much of his results depended on himself and how much on the car?
