The theme of racer jewelry unexpectedly became relevant during the Miami Grand Prix. Before the start of the stage, race director Niels Wittich reminded riders to take off their jewelry before getting behind the wheel. From this stage, the FIA reserves the right to verify compliance with this rule.
Many riders spoke out against the jewelry ban, including Lewis Hamilton, who spoke out during Friday’s press conference. One of Lewis’s arguments was that he couldn’t get the ring out of his nose alone. Before the start of the first training session, it was announced that Lewis and FIA officials reached a compromise: the Mercedes driver removed the earrings and was given a two-stage postponement to surgically remove the ring from his nose.
Sanctions for pilots with decorations are quite serious. For the first violation, the driver will be fined 50 thousand euros, for the second – 100 thousand euros, for the third – 250 thousand euros and a possible deprivation of earned points.
The team can also be fined if they report that the rider has removed the decorations, and this will not be the case – in this case the team will be fined 250 thousand euros.
