The new Mercedes car suffers from serious build-up, which is considered to be the root cause of the resulting problems, and does not provide the necessary adhesion of the drive wheels to the track. According to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, the team is preparing a new version of the rear wing for the Melbourne stage, which will reduce build-up and provide more grip on the track.
“We thought the build-up in Jeddah wouldn’t be as noticeable because the tarmac is smoother there. But we were wrong. We still don’t fully understand what factors are causing the buildup. We continue to learn how to work with the new machine,” said a team representative.
Using a lower downward rear wing in Jeddah than in Bahrain didn’t improve either, so the team just increased the height of the suspension, which negatively affected speed and made it difficult to find settings. George Russell did it, Lewis Hamilton didn’t. “Differences in settings were minimal,” the engineers admitted.
