Valtteri Bottas: Damaged exhaust system and turbine

Valtteri Bottas crashed his car in the first practice session of the Miami Grand Prix and missed the second session. Finn said the exhaust system and turbine were damaged as a result of the impact.

His Alfa Romeo teammate Guanyu Zhou completed both sessions and set an eighth fastest time in the second. The Chinese rider is satisfied with the speed of the car, but noted the very slippery asphalt of the track.

Guanyu Zhou (8th): “In the first practice the track was quite slippery – we didn’t expect this, so it wasn’t easy. In the second session we managed to make some serious progress – the team found the right settings, which made our speed grow quickly, which can be considered a good sign. There’s still a lot to do, but so far it’s going well, and I’ve enjoyed driving this track.

We were on the simulator preparing for the stage and 95% of our expectations of the track were correct, with the exception of asphalt. The surface is very slippery – it is enough to go past the trajectory at the top of the bend with half the wheel, because the car will go straight straight ahead. In this case, there is no point in even trying to turn. This greatly complicates the task, but all on an equal footing.

I want to continue the series of exits in the second part of qualifying. It might even be possible to reach the final – in Imola, no luck because of the red flags, but we’ll see what the result will be here.

Valtteri Bottas (did not participate): “The mistake cost me dearly, which is unpleasant. Nothing can change now and all I can do is make the most of Saturday’s training.

The impact fell on the rear of the car – as a result, the exhaust system and turbine were damaged. Given the amount of work we had at the start of the second session, we didn’t have a chance to fix everything. I had no luck in that regard.

The track itself is interesting and quite difficult, especially the second sector. During the day, the condition of the asphalt changed rapidly. On Saturday I will have to find out what the grip has become with the asphalt.”
