Due to red flags, the teams had to interrupt the series of circles on Friday, which prevented us from assessing the wear and effectiveness of the tires over a long distance, but Pirelli believes that everything is going according to plan.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “An interesting day at the challenging new circuit in Miami, although both practices were interrupted by red flags.
Traction has been good from the start and tire wear will determine the strategy for Sunday’s race. Theoretically, the difference between one and two pit stops is small, but the amount of wear can change the balance.
In the morning we saw how tires can be seriously damaged after driving on abrasive asphalt in the starting zones, and on this track it is easy to make a mistake. The most important factor is the wear of the right front tire.
As expected, track conditions improved significantly as the day progressed, and this progress will continue tomorrow. During practice, the teams mainly worked with Soft and Medium tires – the C2 compound, which is used here as Hard, is known to them, so it was hardly used on Friday.
Another factor could be the weather – it was incredibly hot on Friday with high humidity. The risk of heavy rain this weekend is very high, especially on race day.”
