Sebastian Vettel has recently become increasingly active in environmental conservation and this is probably why he has decided to end his Formula 1 career. At the same time, he is not enthusiastic about the environmental policy put forward by the World Cup organizers, as he believes that the switch to synthetic fuel could have happened ten years ago, but is not planned until 2026.
The four-time world champion is also very skeptical about Formula 1’s desire to be climate neutral by 2030.
“In words, this all sounds good, but there is no substance in it,” Sebastian told the German edition of Auto Motor und Sport. – The question is: what happens if the set goals are not achieved? Who is going to check this? If Formula 1 is going to control itself, then this is a nice slogan, but it does not inspire much confidence.
Ultimately, it is important that Formula 1 is ready to cut its piece of the pie in order to take really meaningful steps.
If we are talking about the full transition to synthetic fuels, it will not take place until 2026, while these technologies already exist, they are not that new. Formula 1 likes to claim that they are pioneers in all areas of technology, and they really would have been pioneers if they had introduced this technology ten years ago. But better late than never.”
Sebastian Vettel is trying to rebuild his life and that of his family to do as little damage to the environment as possible. There are no disposable plastic dishes in his house, solar panels have been installed on the roof and he completely refused to fly private jets. Now he’s trying to change his diet: “I’m trying to eat less meat, and I don’t care where this meat comes from. There is nothing wrong with meat as such – rather the question is which technologies are used in agriculture.
I don’t want to explain to people how to live. Of course, we all try to maintain the usual standard of living and do not say that anything has to be sacrificed. But it would be nice if people think more about what they consume and how they behave. Even small steps can have a positive effect.”
