Magnussen: One of the hardest races is waiting for us

In an interview with the Haas press service, Kevin Magnussen spoke about the difficulties Formula 1 drivers have to overcome during the night lap in Singapore.

Q: Are you excited to be back in Singapore for the first time since 2019?
Kevin MagnussenA: I really like Singapore. In general I am a fan of city trails and Singapore has one of the best city trails. The race is physically demanding, so we spend a lot of time in the gym, but it gives motivation to work on improving our form.

Q: In 2018 and 2019 you showed the best lap of the race. Are you proud of this achievement?
Kevin Magnussen: I really had the best time in 2018 and 2019 thanks to the new tires in the last laps. We didn’t earn points in those races, though, so I don’t think there’s any reason for pride. I would be prouder to finish in the top ten and I hope we can score points this year.

Q: Do you change anything in your standard race preparation program before coming to Singapore?
Kevin Magnussen: One of the most difficult races awaits us, not only because of the heat and humidity, but also because of the track configuration – the corners follow one another, so we don’t have time to rest. Most circuits have a few straights that will take your breath away, but in Singapore, even on stretches called straights, you still have to work with the wheel. In addition, there are many bumps on the track, so you don’t relax too much.

I have no specific approaches to preparation. Like I said, I train with all my might. I remind myself that the race in Singapore will be very difficult which will motivate myself to work in the gym.

Q: Do you suffer from night shifts in Singapore?
Kevin Magnussen: We’re getting old in the European time zone, which can be tricky because you have to stay up late. On the other hand, it helps because you don’t have to get used to a different time zone.

From Singapore we will go straight to Japan and there we will have to change lanes for another time, which we will do on Monday right after the night race.
