The FIA World Motorsport Council today approved the decision to increase the number of sprint races to six from the 2023 season. Voting was done online.
Mohammed bin SulayemFIA President: “The confirmation that six sprint races will be included in the six race weekends starting in 2023 is another example of the continued growth and prosperity of the major motorsport category.
Through close collaboration with Stefano Domenicali and FOM colleagues, we have made a detailed analysis of the impact that additional sprint sessions will have and adjusted the relevant parameters of our work to ensure that everything is arranged as clearly as possible.
Over the past two seasons, sprint sessions have become popular with fans as they give the weekend schedule a boost. I am confident that this positive trend will continue and I am delighted that the World Motor Sport Council has endorsed our decision today.”
Stefano DomenicalicFormula 1 President and CEO: “We are building on the success of the new format, which was first introduced in 2021, and I am pleased to confirm that there will be six sprint races on the championship calendar from 2023.
Thanks to the sprint, interesting events take place on the track on all three days of the weekend, all riders participate and have an incentive to fight from Friday to Sunday. All this adds drama and entertainment, which is confirmed by the positive response from fans, teams, promoters and partners of the Championship.
This format brings a new dimension to Formula 1 and we all want it to continue to be a success in the future.”
The list of stages, of which sprint races are on the program, will be published later.
