Oscar Piastri praised the human and professional qualities of Daniel Ricciardo, who he will replace at McLaren next year.
Ricciardo is forced to leave the Woking team a year before his contract expires, but he will receive a very generous compensation for this. However, his attitude towards his young and promising compatriot, who confidently won the Formula 2 title last year, did not change and Oscar is grateful to him for that.
Piastri was on another edition of the Australian podcast In the Fast Lane and was asked if it was important for him to talk to Ricciardo.
“I think so. And it was very noble of him that he was the first to approach me,” said Oscar. – I wanted to talk to him myself, but at that time he entered the race, and to be honest I wasn’t sure if he wanted to communicate with me, but while I was trying to figure out what to say to him, he beat me to it.
Daniel is a true professional. I used to have a lot of respect for him, but after he behaved, I started to respect him even more. It is very important to me that we have had such a conversation. Now I know he doesn’t hold a grudge, and it really helped me a lot – it was a pleasant moment.
I suppose if I manage to replicate at least approximately his success on the circuits, and acquire such a reputation outside them, I will consider that I am doing my job more or less well.
