The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has approved an increase in Formula One sprint races from three to six from the 2023 season, according to the F1 website.
The last two years of the F1 calendar have been three sprints. At the same time, sprint races are held on tracks with the best overtaking opportunities. The winner of the sprint race receives three points, two points for second place and one point for third place.
“We can confirm that six sprints will be part of the championship from 2023, building on the success of the new format first introduced in 2021. The sprint takes place over three days, with all riders battling for something from the start on Friday to the main event on Sunday, adding more drama and excitement to the weekend. Feedback from fans, teams, promoters and partners has been overwhelmingly positive and this format adds a new dimension to Formula 1,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
The 2023 Formula 1 season will feature a record 24 stages.
