There were two serious accidents on Friday and Saturday at Turn 14. The speed at the collision was not too high, but there is no protective barrier – the cars flew into the concrete.
On Friday, Carlos Sainz suffered a neck injury and a bruise to his hip, and on Saturday Esteban Ocon’s car suffered a cracked chassis, making him ineligible for qualifying.
Ferrari told the FIA back on Friday that there should be TecPro barriers between turns 13 and 14, but they were not installed. According to FIA calculations, the speed of the car and the possible angle of impact did not justify the installation of a barrier. In addition, the plastic elements would take up at least one meter, making the track too narrow.
On Saturday evening, Carlos Sainz commented on the situation critically: “In the place where I crashed the car, you have to put up TecPro barriers. I don’t want to criticize anyone, but on Friday after the accident I told the FIA that such an accident should not be so painful. Saturday I feel a little pain in my neck. TecPro is needed in that place, because now there is a bare wall.
Esteban Ocon also crashed the car in this corner, and I’m pretty sure he agrees with me. I don’t understand why it’s done that way. I talked about it during the pilots’ briefing, but nothing has changed.”
