Wolff: We will soon have to decide how to proceed

Mercedes has been preparing many new products for the stage in Miami, but on Saturday Lewis Hamilton said the leaders’ backlog remained the same. Team leader Toto Wolff commented on the situation.

Toto Wolff: “We believe that the concept of the car we have chosen still allows us to compete with the leaders. Unfortunately, she turned out to be very sensitive to circumstances. When we get into the working range of the car, it’s competitive, but it’s extremely difficult to get into, also because the build forces us to raise the suspension height significantly. However, we still believe that our ideas will produce results.

After the race on Sunday we will have more information, then we will collect data in Barcelona, which is very important for evaluating the correlation as we have worked on winter testing on this track with the first version of the chassis – and we will be able to compare.

The time will soon come when we must decide how to proceed. Now it doesn’t work like it used to, when you could refuse to fine-tune the car in one season to focus on another. This time the rules will not change.

Every day we understand the causes of the problems that arise better. About the podium in Miami, we always said this is an experimental weekend. But if on Friday the experiment was a success, it wasn’t on Saturday.

On Friday we assessed the potential of the machine in a situation where we got into the settings. But she suffered from serious build-up. Then we tried to change something – this change seemed quite small to us, but the car began to behave worse. We went back and in qualifying both cars suffered from build-up again.

The build affects everything – the downforce, the choice of braking points, the behavior of the tires – as a result we were only sixth and 12th in qualifying. We are really learning, this process is exponential, but so far it has been accompanied by great difficulties.”
