Epic Games and Hasbro have revealed Fortnite Monopoly, a new version of the classic board game built around the setting of the hit video game Fortnite. The companies confirmed a string of changes to the traditional rules alongside the new theme.
Fortnite Monopoly is developed jointly by Epic Games and Hasbro and is modelled on the classic board game, but with several notable changes to how it is played.
How It Differs From Traditional Monopoly
Money has been removed from the game entirely. Instead, each player has hit-points, and the last player left standing wins, mirroring the video game's battle royale format.
The Community Chest and Chance squares from the original board have been swapped for spike traps, launch pads and glowing chests, all taken from Fortnite. The classic Go, Jail and Free Parking squares remain unchanged.
Players will also pick up properties, reportedly all based on real Fortnite locations, on a first-come, first-served basis rather than buying them.
The game uses one regular dice as normal, while a second dice lets players build walls around their properties for defence and use special abilities such as boogie bombs, healing bandages and attacks that damage other players.
Storm cards have also been added, letting players damage properties held by their opponents. Kotaku described the changes on Twitter, noting that "Fortnite Monopoly replaces Boardwalk with Tilted Towers and lets you 'snipe' players."
Release Date
Donald Mustard, Worldwide Creative Director at Epic Games, and Hasbro have confirmed the board game will be released on Monday, October 1, 2018.
What Is Fortnite
Fortnite is a free-to-play action-shooter developed and published by Epic Games, with more than 125 million players worldwide. It first launched in July 2017, and its battle royale mode, which pits 100 players against each other in matches combining shooting, fortress building and survival, arrived in September 2017.
The game came to Android in August 2018 and is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows, MacOS and iOS.
