Greek attacking midfielder Giannis Konstantelias scored on his Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund against Hamburg before suffering a serious knee injury on Saturday night.
The playmaker held his knee and fell writhing to the turf in the 53rd minute of the match. He limped off the field as he was substituted, leaving club medical staff concerned that he has suffered a torn cruciate ligament.
A cruciate ligament injury affects the stabilizing ligaments inside the knee joint and typically requires extensive medical treatment and months of recovery time.
The full extent of the injury will be determined by a magnetic resonance imaging scan, which is scheduled to take place on either Sunday or Monday.
Following the match, Borussia Dortmund issued a message wishing a speedy recovery to the Greek international.
Manager and Director React to Injury
Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac spoke about his deep disappointment over the injury immediately after the match. Kovac said he felt incredibly sorry for Konstantelias, noting that the midfielder had made an exceptional impression at the club from his very first day and was liked by everyone.
The manager added that after playing such a strong first half, needing to be substituted and fearing the worst was incredibly frustrating. Kovac walked directly to Konstantelias as the player left the pitch.
Kovac stated that what saddened him deeply was that Konstantelias was injured and that they had to discuss something more serious. He revealed that what the team doctor told him did not sound good.
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Ole Book also addressed the severity of the situation. Book said the club needed to be cautious about what they communicated on the day, but acknowledged they were certainly worried about a serious injury.
When asked directly if the concern related to Konstantelias's cruciate ligament, Book confirmed that was indeed the issue.
Debut Goal and First Half Performance
Before his injury, Konstantelias had experienced a memorable debut alongside fellow Greek player Konstantinos Karetsas, with both starting in Dortmund's attacking lineup against Hamburg.
Borussia Dortmund took the lead in the ninth minute when Karetsas and striker Serhou Guirassy exchanged passes at high speed. Karetsas delivered the assist to Guirassy, who opened the scoring with a diagonal strike.
Karetsas searched for a goal of his own just a minute later, but his tenth-minute shot was saved by Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes. In the 33rd minute, Konstantelias made an impressive run down the left wing and set up Karetsas inside the box, but Karetsas sent his shot high over the crossbar. Shortly afterward, Fernandes produced another save to deny a powerful effort from Karetsas.
Konstantelias doubled Dortmund's lead in first-half stoppage time. Entering the penalty area in the 45+1 minute, he fired a shot into the net despite taking a deflection to mark his first goal in a Borussia shirt. He celebrated the goal with a hug from Karetsas, who had provided an assist earlier in the match.
Second Half Action and Substitutions
The second half opened with further attacking action from the Greek duo. In the 50th minute, Karetsas broke in from the right wing and forced another save from Fernandes, before Konstantelias missed the target from close range on the rebound.
Three minutes later, in the 53rd minute, Konstantelias suffered his knee injury and was forced off the pitch. The Greek involvement in the match ended in the 74th minute when Karetsas was substituted and replaced by Inacio.
