Pizarro made the comments while attending the 2026 German Super Cup final as one of the Bundesliga's recognized legends, using the halftime broadcast to discuss the pair of young compatriots.
He said it was important for Peruvians to have players in Europe, adding that it had been a while since one had come through. He said having these two young players was important for Peru and that he hoped things went well for each of them at their clubs.
Pizarro's Bundesliga legacy
Pizarro spent much of his playing career in Germany, where he built one of the most extensive records of any Peruvian footballer and became one of the country's most recognized names in the sport. He also played for Alianza Lima before moving to Europe. His long history in the Bundesliga gives weight to his assessment of what it takes for young South American players to succeed there.
Felipe Chavez's uncertain future
On Felipe Chavez, known as 'Pipo,' Pizarro acknowledged that it was not yet clear whether the young player would remain in Germany. He said that if Chavez does end up changing clubs, he hoped he would stay within the Bundesliga rather than leave the league altogether.
Praise for Fabio Gruber at Mainz
Pizarro was more specific in his assessment of Fabio Gruber, a defender at Mainz 05. He described him as a very complete player who is doing things well, and said he hoped Gruber would keep developing at Mainz and eventually be able to contribute to the Peru national team as well.
