IIHF confirms the suspension of Russia and Belarus from all international competitions in 2023

The ban applies to teams of all ages.

International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) upheld the indefinite ban of national teams Russia and Belarus to participate in all international competitions. The IIHF Congress clarified that the ban applies to tournaments in 2023 all age categories.

At the same time, officials retained Russia and Belarus’ rating places in their divisions at the time of the ban. Congress has prescribed a procedure for promotion and relegation between divisions for other teams, taking into account whether the ban will remain in force, or the Russians will be returned to the competition.

In February, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs from participating in competitions under its auspices due to the invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine.

The Russians missed the 2022 World Cup and now will not be able to play at the 2023 World Cup. Earlier it was reported that NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly is not against the participation of Russia and Belarus in the 2024 world championship.

In April, the IIHF took away the right to host the 2023 World Championship from Russia. Also, Russia was deprived of the right to host the 2023 World Youth Championship, which was supposed to be held in Omsk and Novosibirsk.
