Moscow CSKA named veteran team Alexandra Popova for the player development coach position, according to the hockey club’s website.
Popov’s duties will include working with hockey players from all three teams in the club system: CSKA, Zvezda and Red Army. The contract with Popov has already been signed, the duration of the agreement is not specified.
CSKA won the Gagarin Cup last season. Popov turned 42 on August 31. Coming out of the KHL playoffs last season, the forward said he hadn’t made up his mind to retire yet.
Before joining CSKA, Popov played for Avangard Omsk. The striker has been playing at the army club since the 2016/17 season. As a member of the team, he played 315 games, during which he scored 133 points (43 + 90) with a utility indicator of +91. With the team, he won the Gagarin Cup twice (in 2019 and 2022) and last season was recognized as the most valuable player in the playoffs.
